Ahmed Sabry is a painter based in Cairo. His work often builds on the images propagated by mass media, and reflects a dark sense of humor. His 2012 series, titled 'The True story of Mohannad's death' for instance was inspired by the famous Turkish soap opera 'Noor'. His latest project, titled 'Fifth District' and currently showing at Mashrabia Gallery, focuses on landscape art. The painting series is mysterious and unsettling as he chooses unexpected events to situate within typical European landscapes.
Medrar.TV visited Sabry in his studio in February as he worked on the paintings and discussed the 'Fifth District' series which he started after doing commercial wall paintings in private homes in the Fifth Settlement neighborhood in Cairo. Sabry also discussed the 'Fifth District' in relation to his earlier projects such as 'Rhino Story'.
The interview is in Arabic and has English subtitles.
