Augmented Airspace

A project by Dia Hamed and Lot Amoros

2nd D-CAF Festival, downtown Cairo, Egypt

April 2013

Downtown residents encountered a drone for the first time in April when Egyptian artist Dia Hamed and Spanish artist and software engineer Lot Amoros flew a mini hexacopter through the streets of Cairo. The artists sought to explore air as a medium of expression and hence designed and streamed images inspired by the events taking place in the heart of the capital since 2011. Through Augmented Airspace, they filmed the city from above and enabled viewers on the ground to see the live footage in new ways thanks to digital skin layers that show an augmented view of the city.

In this video interview, the artists explain the idea behind bringing a drone to downtown Cairo and how they designed and developed the tools for their artistic intervention.
