Egyptian Centre for Economic and Social Rights to sue current prime minister and others for corrupt sell-off of state assets.

The head of the Egyptian Centre for Economic and Social Rights (ECESR), Khaled Ali, and political activist Hamdi Fakhrany have announced their intention to open legal proceedings against around fifty former and serving ministers following the Administrative Court's ruling on the corrupt privatisation of Egyptian state firms.

Egypt’s current Prime Minister Kamal El-Ganzouri, who also served in the post between 1996 and 1999, heads the list of ministers indicted in the lawsuit.

According to a statement issued by the ECESR, Ali will seek to question and investigate all board members of Egyptian holding companies and the ministerial group for economic policy.

He added that the provisions of the court’s decision revealed many aspects of administrative and financial corruption that afflicted the privatisation process. The level of corruption, found the court, resulted in the deliberate and criminal waste of public money, necessitating the prosecution of those involved for "the biggest destruction of the Egyptian economy."
